Shilajit vs Ashwagandha: Which Adaptogen Is Best? | Pure Shilajit UK

Two of the most talked-about natural supplements in the UK right now are shilajit and ashwagandha. Both have thousands of years of traditional use behind them. Both are backed by modern research. And both are considered adaptogens: substances that help the body adapt to stress and restore balance.

But they're not the same thing, and they don't do the same job. So which one should you choose? Or should you take both? This guide breaks it all down, with links to the real studies so you can check them yourself.

Short on time? Shilajit is the one for energy, physical performance and minerals. Ashwagandha is the one for stress, cortisol and sleep. Lots of people take both, and our resin and ashwagandha bundle is the easy way to do it.

What are adaptogens and why do they matter?

Adaptogens are natural substances, usually herbs, roots or mineral compounds, that help regulate the body's stress response, support hormonal balance and improve resilience to physical and mental stress.

Stimulants push the body in one direction. Adaptogens work both ways: helping to calm the body when stress is high, and supporting energy when the body is depleted.

Shilajit and ashwagandha both fall into this group, but they work through different mechanisms.

What is shilajit?

Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin that seeps out of rock high in mountain ranges like the Himalayas. It's been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years. You take a pea-sized amount, dissolved in a warm drink.

Ours is harvested above 16,000ft in the Nepal Himalayas and sun dried. Every batch is lab tested by Huson and Hardwick (Alex Stewart Agriculture), an ISO 17025 accredited lab in Liverpool. Our February 2026 batch came back at 73.8% fulvic acid and 88.5% total humic substances. See the Lab Results page or the full certificate (PDF).

Shilajit: what it does best

Shilajit is known for supporting cellular energy and mineral replenishment.

  • Energy production. Supports mitochondrial function for sustained energy. A 2012 study found shilajit restored mitochondrial activity in rats after chronic stress (read the study).
  • Mineral delivery. Contains 80+ trace minerals delivered through fulvic acid.
  • Physical performance. Often used by athletes to support endurance and recovery. In a 2019 trial, active men taking 500mg a day held on to more strength after a tiring exercise test than men on placebo (read the study).
  • Testosterone support. Research suggests benefits for male hormonal health. In a 90 day trial, men aged 45 to 55 taking 250mg twice a day had significantly better testosterone levels than placebo (read the study).
  • Cognitive support. Fulvic compounds may support mental clarity (read the review).

What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small shrub whose root has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years. It's one of the most studied adaptogenic herbs for stress and mood. It's usually taken as a root extract in capsules.

Ashwagandha: what it does best

  • Cortisol reduction. Helps lower the body's main stress hormone. In a 60 day trial, adults taking ashwagandha root extract had significantly lower cortisol than the placebo group (read the study).
  • Stress and anxiety support. Often used to improve resilience to chronic stress. The same trial found significant improvements on every stress scale measured.
  • Sleep quality. Many users experience deeper sleep. In a 10 week trial, ashwagandha root extract improved sleep onset, sleep efficiency and sleep quality scores compared with placebo (read the study).
  • Thyroid support. Early studies suggest metabolic support. An 8 week trial found ashwagandha improved thyroid hormone levels in people with subclinical hypothyroidism (read the study).
  • Male fertility. Research has shown improvements in sperm quality and testosterone markers. In a 90 day trial in men with low sperm count, sperm count rose by 167% (read the study), and a 2019 trial in men aged 40 to 70 linked ashwagandha to a 14.7% greater rise in testosterone than placebo (read the study).

Can you take shilajit and ashwagandha together?

Yes, and this combination is becoming more and more popular.

Shilajit supports energy production and mineral status. Ashwagandha helps regulate cortisol and stress levels. Together they address two of the most common reasons people feel fatigued: nutrient depletion and chronic stress.

Together they make a powerful adaptogenic blend that helps your body handle stress, balance hormones and restore energy, and can help improve focus.

Many users find the benefits are stronger when both supplements are used together.

The best way to take both

Start with shilajit resin as your base. Resin is the purest, most concentrated form of shilajit, so that's where your shilajit should come from. Then add ashwagandha alongside it.

  • Morning: a pea-sized amount of shilajit resin stirred into warm water, tea or coffee. Use a small spoon to scoop it out.
  • Alongside it: our Ashwagandha and Shilajit capsules, as the label says. They're also handy when you're travelling and can't make a warm drink.

Our resin and ashwagandha bundle puts 60g of resin and 120 capsules together. Why resin and not just capsules? We explain in Shilajit Resin vs Capsules: Which Should You Buy?

New to resin? How to Incorporate Shilajit into Your Daily Routine has seven easy ways to take it.

Who should choose which?

  • Athletes: start with shilajit for endurance and recovery.
  • High-stress professionals: ashwagandha for stress management.
  • Students: ashwagandha for stress, shilajit for mental energy.
  • Men over 35: both together for hormonal support. More in Shilajit and Testosterone.
  • Anyone feeling run down: shilajit can help rebuild mineral levels.

Both have roots in Ayurveda

Shilajit and ashwagandha both come from Ayurveda, India's traditional system of medicine. Shilajit is classed there as a rasayana, one of its most valued preparations, and it was rarely used on its own. We cover that history in Shilajit and Ayurvedic Medicine: A Timeless Partnership.
