The Science of Shilajit: Unlocking the Power of Fulvic Acid

If you've read anything about shilajit, you'll have seen two words come up again and again: fulvic acid.

It's the key compound in shilajit, and it plays a major role in nutrient absorption, detoxification and cellular energy. Studies have highlighted its potential to improve cognitive function, combat oxidative stress and enhance energy levels.

This post explains what fulvic acid actually is, how much of it is in shilajit, what the research says and how to tell how much you're really getting. Every study we mention is real and linked. Want the resin itself? Here's our Himalayan shilajit resin, tested at 73.8% fulvic acid.

What is fulvic acid?

Fulvic acid is a natural compound that forms when plant matter breaks down over a very long time. It belongs to a group called humic substances, which are found in soil, peat and, in very high amounts, shilajit.

Shilajit forms over centuries as plants trapped in mountain rock slowly break down with the help of microbes. That's what makes it so rich in fulvic acid. (We explain the whole process in The Ancient Secrets of Shilajit.)

Fulvic acid vs humic acid

Humic substances are usually split into two main groups:

  • Fulvic acid. Smaller molecules that dissolve in water whatever the acidity. This is the main compound in shilajit.
  • Humic acid. Larger molecules that only dissolve in certain conditions.

Add the two together and you get total humic substances. It's one of the main numbers to look for on a shilajit lab certificate.

What does fulvic acid do?

Fulvic acid is a key component of shilajit, and it plays a major role in three areas:

1. Nutrient absorption

Fulvic acid acts as a natural transporter, helping the body absorb minerals and nutrients at a cellular level. That's why shilajit is often described as a carrier for its own trace minerals.

2. Detoxification

Fulvic acid plays a role in detoxification. Ayurveda has used shilajit to support the body's natural detox for centuries, as we cover in Shilajit and Ayurvedic Medicine.

3. Cellular energy

Fulvic acid plays a role in cellular energy. A 2012 study in rats found shilajit restored the activity of mitochondria, the parts of cells that produce energy, after chronic stress (read the study).

What does the research say about fulvic acid?

Studies have highlighted fulvic acid's potential in three more areas.

Cognitive function

A 2012 review by researchers in Chile looked at shilajit's potential to support cognitive function, with fulvic acid as its main active compound. In lab studies, fulvic acid stopped tau, a protein linked with brain ageing, from clumping together (read the review).

Oxidative stress

The same 2012 rat study found shilajit raised the cells' own antioxidant defences and reduced lipid peroxidation, a marker of cell damage. A 48 week trial in postmenopausal women found shilajit extract lowered markers of oxidative stress compared with placebo (read the study).

Energy levels

In a 2019 human trial, active men taking 500mg of shilajit a day for 8 weeks held on to more of their strength after a tiring exercise test than men on a placebo (read the study).

A 2011 review in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology also reports that fulvic acid has shown a positive effect on immune function (read the review). For a wider look at the research, see Unlocking the Health Benefits of Shilajit: What Science Says.

How much fulvic acid is in shilajit?

It varies a lot from batch to batch and from seller to seller. That's the honest answer, and it's why you should never take a number on a label at face value.

The only way to know is a lab test. Our resin is tested by Huson and Hardwick (Alex Stewart Agriculture), an ISO 17025 accredited lab in Liverpool. Every batch is tested. Our February 2026 batch came back at:

  • Fulvic acid: 73.8%
  • Total humic substances: 88.5%

It also showed heavy metals within limits and no E. coli, salmonella or pesticides detected. You can see the Lab Results page or open the full certificate (PDF).

At Pure Shilajit UK, we provide shilajit resin with a high concentration of fulvic acid for maximum health benefits.

How to check the fulvic acid in your shilajit

Before you buy, look for:

  • A fulvic acid percentage on a lab certificate, not just on the label
  • A named, accredited lab. ISO 17025 is the one to look for
  • A batch and a date on the certificate
  • Total humic substances as well as fulvic acid

No certificate, no deal. How to Spot Fake Shilajit has 7 checks to run first.

Shilajit vs fulvic acid supplements

You can buy fulvic acid on its own, usually as drops. So why take shilajit?

Because shilajit gives you fulvic acid as it comes in nature: alongside humic acid, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and naturally occurring minerals from the rock. That's the form that's been used for thousands of years, and it's what most of the research above looked at.

Which form of shilajit has the most fulvic acid?

Resin. It's the purest, most concentrated form of shilajit, with nothing added, so a whole serving is shilajit. Capsules are often blends, where the shilajit shares space with other ingredients. They're handy for travel, but for everyday use resin comes first. More in Shilajit Resin vs Capsules: Which Should You Buy?

How to get fulvic acid from shilajit

  1. Use a small spoon to scoop out a pea-sized amount of resin, about 500mg.
  2. Stir it into warm water, tea or coffee. Warm, not boiling.
  3. Drink it once a day.

Real resin dissolves completely and turns the drink a golden to dark amber colour. There are seven easy ways to take it in How to Incorporate Shilajit into Your Daily Routine.

A 30g jar holds about 60 servings, so roughly two months. That's about 50p a day, or as little as 33p on bundles. See How Long Does a Jar of Shilajit Resin Last?

FAQ

What is fulvic acid in shilajit?

The main compound in shilajit. It's a natural humic substance formed when plant matter breaks down over a very long time.

How much fulvic acid is in your shilajit?

Our February 2026 batch tested at 73.8% fulvic acid and 88.5% total humic substances. The full certificate is on our Lab Results page.

What does fulvic acid do?

It plays a major role in nutrient absorption, detoxification and cellular energy. Studies have highlighted its potential for cognitive function, oxidative stress and energy levels.

Is fulvic acid the same as humic acid?

No. They're both humic substances, but fulvic acid has smaller molecules and dissolves in water more easily. Together they make up total humic substances.

Is it better to take shilajit or fulvic acid drops?

Shilajit gives you fulvic acid alongside the other natural compounds it comes with, and it's the form most of the research looked at.

Can anyone take shilajit?

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, taking medication or have a medical condition, check with your GP first.
